Derawan - Indonesian Borneo

DERAWAN - Indonesian Borneo May 17 thru 28, 2010

The east coast of Kalimantan offers some of the most spectacular walls in indonesia. Schools of thousands of Barracudas, mantas, the unique jellyfish lake and the nesting turtles are among the highlights. Join Tim Rock and Simon Pridmore for a trip to this remote place where Sangalaki Island, Kakaban and others offer great diving. Just south of the famous Sipadan Island of Borneo, Malaysia.

Little by little Derawan is getting a reputation for great big fish like mantas and schools of barracuda as well as a great place for small stuff including leaf fish, nudibranchs and mandarinfish. This area has one of the world's few jellyfish marine lakes and Sangalaki is a sea turtle nesting sanctuary.

We will be concentrating the diving in the outer islands where few people dive. There will certainly be wonderful marine surprises.

  • Proposed SCHEDULE
  • Tarakan - Tarakan 11 Nights
  • Little by little all the old Indonesian logistical and political problems are being left behind, and areas like Derawan can be placed back into the map of the diving world. It is here Indonesia better combines both abundant pelagic and macro life life. We will combine the famous Sangalaki and Maratua and head for other atolls, reefs and islands that are a bit more remote. Adrenaline is guaranteed.
  • Day 1 -Arrival at Tarakan and departure
  • Day 2 - Exploratory Karang Baliktaba and Pulau Tanjang
  • Day 3 -Exploratory Pulau Derawan, Karang Masimbung and Karang Pinaka
  • Day 4- Sangalaki. Mantas and more mantas, that is the turtles let us see. There are hundreds of green turtles and at night we will go to see them laying eggs. About an average of 20 turtles come every day to lay their eggs, we will organize in conjunction with Sangalaki resort and nice dinner on land and get a chance to see the new born ones and get some more information about all the programs they are developing.
  • Day 5 - Exploratory Karang Malalungan
  • Day 6 - Exploratory Karang lintang and Pulau Sambit
  • Day 7 - Exploratory Pulau Balambangag and Muara reef
  • Day 8 - Exploratory Karang Gosungang

  • Day 11 - Kakaban: visit to the jelly fish lake, one of the few ones in the world.
  • Day 12 - Arrival, disembark and transfer to the airport.
